Drive-In Worship Pentecost 2020

Things to know:

  1. If you are sick stay home
  2. Each household must be in a separate car (no car pooling)
  3. Park carefully according to the usher’s instructions.
  4. Attendees must stay in their cars at all times. This is extremely important, you will be protecting the few people outside their cars (pastor, ushers, other helpers) by staying in! If we find we can’t handle staying in our cars as a community, we won’t be able to do this in the future. Thank you for your full cooperation!
  5. If you roll down any car windows, only roll down on the driver’s side of the car. This is to maintain a safe distance between each household.
  6. Memorial will not be serving any beverages, feel free to bring your own! Do not share food or drink between cars.
  7. Memorial is unable to provide bathrooms during the service. Keep that in mind as you sip your coffee!
  8. No passing of objects or physical contact between households.
  9. The service will be under 45 minutes (see #7). Please safely make your way out of the parking lot when the service is finished and avoid the temptation to get out of your car and visit with others.

  • Thank you for staying in your cars.
  • This has been a heart wrenching week for Minnesota, an eruption of pain and oppression and grief. For this next hour I want to say to you that we are here to remember that God’s love is for all people, all people without exception. In the face of racism and hatred and violence – this is a hard thing to remember. While you are here in worship of the Living and loving hold tight to that touchpoint today.

Let us be drawn into the beauty and healing of God’s love as we sing.

Opening Hymn

O Living Breath of God       ELW #407

Thanksgiving for Baptism

Alleluia! Christ is risen.Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are raised with him to new life. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

I invite you to activate your windshield wiper fluid, and as you see the water splash on the windshield and fly through the air, remember how God’s liberating action comes to us, clearing our eyesight and making a way toward new life. So we pray…

We give you thanks, O God,for in the beginning you created us in your image and planted us in a well-watered garden. In the desert you promised pools of water for the parched, and you gave us water from the rock. When we did not know the way, you sent the Good Shepherd to lead us to still waters.

At the cross, you watered us from Jesus’ wounded side, and on this day, you shower us again with the water of life. We praise you for your salvation through water, for the water in this font, and for all water everywhere. Bathe us in your forgiveness, grace, and love. Satisfy the thirsty, and give us the life only you can give.

To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Gospel Reading, John 20: 19-23

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Sermon

Hymn

The Church of Christ in Every Age ELW #729

Apostles’ Creed

ELW pg. 105

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Lord, listen to your children praying. Send us love, send us power, send us grace.

Sharing of God’s Peace

Please share a sign of God’s peace with those around by honking your horns and flashing your lights!

Holy Communion

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of every nation and tongue.

Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal: you we praise and glorify, you we worship and adore. You formed the earth from chaos; you encircled the globe with air; you created fire for warmth and light; you nourish the lands with water. You molded us in your image, and with mercy higher than the mountains, with grace deeper than the seas, you blessed the Israelites and cherished them as your own. That also we, estranged and dying, might be adopted to live in your Spirit, you called to us through the life and death of Jesus.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Together as the body of Christ, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

With this bread and cup we remember your Son, the first-born of your new creation. We remember his life lived for others, and his death and resurrection, which renews the face of the earth. We await his coming, when, with the world made perfect through your wisdom, all our sins and sorrows will be no more.

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Holy God, holy and merciful one, holy and compassionate, send upon us and this meal your Holy Spirit, whose breath revives us for life, whose fire rouses us to love. Enfold in your arms all who share this holy food. Nurture in us the fruits of the Spirit, that we may be a living tree, sharing your bounty with all the world.

Amen. Come, Holy Spirit.

Holy and benevolent God,receive our praise and petitions, as Jesus received the cry of the needy, and fill us with your blessing, until, needy no longer and bound to you in love, we feast forever in the triumph of the Lamb: through whom all glory and honor is yours, O God, O Living One, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy church, now and forever. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

ELW pg. 112

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Communion Distribution

At this time I invite you to take the bread in your hand, pass it out to everyone in the car and say these words directly to the others in your car, and if you are in a car alone, hear these words, “This is the body of Christ given for you”.

Now, take the cup fill them with your fruit of the vine and say these words directly to the others in your car and if you are in a car alone, hear these words, “This is the blood of Christ shed for you.”

Brothers and sisters in Christ, may the body and blood for our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and bless you this day and always.  Amen.
